Dextra is a reactive stepping training system designed to help prevent falls. Falls carry significant risk for older adults and for people with certain neurological conditions, and the system aims to improve their safety in daily activity.

How it works

The subject stands on a central platform surrounded by eight smaller platforms arranged like a compass. When a light flashes and a cue appears on a screen, the subject steps quickly onto the indicated target. Difficulty increases progressively by introducing compliance to the central platform, which develops rapid, automatic balance responses while keeping the risk of falling low.

Sensors embedded in the platforms monitor response speed and accuracy. Over time, regular practice with these quick stepping movements aims to improve balance and reduce the risk of serious injuries, such as hip fractures, that result from falls.
